My journey back to the main building was fast. The professors were probably investigating the scene, leaving me free to return unhindered. I collected my dressing gown from the tree hollow and edged behind the hedge that ran beneath the windows.

When I faced the windowsill back into the building, I noticed a blinking glow to my left. I frowned, staring out into the darkness. Was it another professor searching that area? Surely they’d all swarmed toward the voice and airfield.

As I contemplated that very thought, the side door opened and a figure emerged. I crouched behind the hedge. It was the pointy-goatee dwarf professor from the written assessment. He stepped out the door, intent on the blinking light. He glanced toward the airfield warily, then vanished. I saw an imprint of his footsteps in the grass as he walked past the hedge and towards the light. Strange.

My instinct told me to follow. I did so at a distance and as quietly as possible, pulse racing, scared to death that I’d stand on a twig and be discovered. If only I could see in the blasted dark, and if only I could see him! I started thinking this was a lost cause, but I’d already made it this far, so I hid in the bushes and knot of trees near the blinking light.

The light came from a lantern held by a tall, willowy, cloaked woman. I could barely make out her face, but she was looking at and talking to an invisible someone. They were only twenty feet away; the night was still, but I couldn’t hear anything. They must have been using a sound barrier.

A hushed voice came from beside me. “Don’t speak or move.”
